Not only will the Hurricanes get a new quarterback in transfer D'Eriq King, but offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee is coming from SMU as he hopes to improve an offense that finished 98th in yards per game a year ago. This played a significant role in Miami's three straight losses to end the season.
As for UAB, they have already played their first game of the season, as they beat Central Arkansas 45-35. The win gave the Blazers their 19th straight home win.
Thursday will be the first meeting between Miami and the UAB.
UAB in Miami
Kickoff:Thursday, September 10 at 8 p.m. ET
Television:ACC Network
Spread:Miami -13.5
When UAB has the ball
UAB's offensive strength lies in their ground game, as they rushed for 233 yards in their win over Central Arkansas. Spencer Brown is the Blazers' all-time leading rusher with 3,249 career yards. But he'll have his hands full trying to gain ground against a strong Hurricanes defense.
Last season, Miami finished 17th in rushing defense, giving up 114.8 yards per game rushing. However, the Hurricanes' defense will look very different this year after defensive end Gregory Rousseau decided to retire due to COVID-19 concerns. Miami added the transfer of Temple Quincy Roche, who was the AAC Defensive Player of the Year after finishing with 13 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss.
Recently, Hurricanes defensive coordinator Blake Baker said their defensive tackles, especially Jon Ford and Nesta Silvera, needed to be more consistent.
"Based on the film from last year, they showed flashes," Baker said during a Zoom press conference. “There were times when they were really good, and times when they could have been much better. The expectation is much more consistency from these two. Both bring something different. Jon Ford is a gigantic man who can get his hands on [on offensive linemen]. Jade is a quick, sudden twitch, plays with a serious edge. I'm excited about these two guys. If they are both consistent, they can both be dominant.
UAB is also hoping to put the ball in another point guard in Austin Watkins Jr. Last season, Watkins finished with 57 receptions for 1,092 yards and six touchdowns. Against Central Arkansas, he recorded seven catches for 72 yards.
When Miami has the ball
The last time King played a full season, he was responsible for 50 touchdowns in 2018, which led the nation as he also set an AAC record. He, especially in Lashlee's new fast offense, believes the Hurricanes' offense can improve quickly.
Miami will need to replace a few point guards this season as they lost KJ Osborn and DeeJay Dallas in the draft. Brevin Jordan is coming back as he may be a first-round pick at the short end. Miami also has Cam'ron Harris, who will be RB1 this season after rushing for 576 yards a year ago.
UAB will look to battle Miami's offense with senior linebacker Kristopher Moll, who is a top contender for C-USA Defensive Player of the Year. Last season, Moll had 104 tackles, including nine sacks and 16 tackles for loss. The Blazers finished eighth in the nation in total defense after giving up 303.5 yards per game.
Final Analysis
Miami shouldn't take UAB lightly, especially since the Blazers won nine games a season ago. However, it's a game the Hurricanes should definitely win by double digits.
Last week, a Central Arkansas team with less talent managed to score 35 points on the UAB defense. With King, Harris and Jordan, this will cause a lot of problems for the Blazers who will try to contain them for four quarters.
Despite the defensive losses, Miami still boasts one of the most talented defenses in the country. Last week, the Blazers used a two-headed offense from Tyler Johnston III and Bryson Lucero.
Expect fireworks at Hard Rock Stadium, but the Hurricanes have the advantage all round.
Prediction:Miami 47, UAB 24
