Disney's live-action remake of Mulan was supposed to world premiere in theaters this year, but the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to that. So instead, Mulan will debut on Disney+.
Although you must pay an additional cost on top of your subscription if you want immediate access, Mulan will later be available to every Disney+ subscriber at no additional cost.
Mulan is Disney's live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated film of the same name. The film is directed by Niki Caro and stars Yifei Liu in the lead role.
The premise of the story is the same as the original, in which a young woman disguises herself as a man in order to serve in the Imperial Army in place of her ailing father.
Disney has delayed the theatrical release of its live-action remake of Mulan several times, despite premiering in Hollywood in March 2020.
When it became clear that this coronavirus wasn't going away anytime soon, Disney admitted defeat and announced that Mulan would be available on Disney+ instead.
While everything on Disney+ is accessible with the monthly fee of $6.99, Mulan will be different. When it lands on the platform on September 4, the US has to pay a one-time fee of $29.99 to watch it. Disney calls this service "Premier Access".
As long as you maintain a Disney+ subscription, you can then watch Mulan as many times as you want.
Alternatively, if you don't have a Disney+ subscription, the film will be available for purchase from other providers such as Apple, Google, and Roku.
Internationally, prices and details vary. For example, Premier Access is generally cheaper elsewhere, including Europe and Australia. In France, Mulan will not be available for purchase due to a dispute with theater owners.
However, if you're willing to wait, you won't have to pay extra to watch Mulan. As detailed on the Disney+ Help Center, Mulan will be available for free to all Disney+ subscribers on December 4, 2020 (excluding normal subscription fees).
If you can't wait to get your Mulan fix, remember that the animated original is available on Disney+, along with the direct-to-video sequel from 2004.
These two Disney movies are just a few of the great classic movies available to watch on Disney+.
