PUBG Mobile, Free Fire and Other Games Surpass Player Spending by $1 Billion in 2021


The year 2021 has been the golden hour for mobile games as the number of active users for different games is growing exponentially. Most of the games have exceeded $1 billion in revenue in terms of player spending and the list includes PUBG Mobile, Free Fire as well as other popular games.

Mobile games have generated high revenues since the start of the pandemic and have remained one of the most promising industries for two consecutive years. Recent data displayed by official data analytics shows an upward trend in mobile gaming due to increased spending by gamers. One of these popular data analyzers, Sensor Tower, shows that almost 8 games this year were able to generate more than 1 billion in revenue from player spending, which is much higher than the previous year. According to Sensor Tower, Tencent's PUBG Mobile once again dominates the revenue charts, which is no surprise as the game was able to record record revenue during the third quarter of 2021. To date, the game has generated 2, 8 billion spent by gamers worldwide. The other game title capable of generating almost the same revenue is Honor Of Kings, also published by Tencent. A few months ago, Honor of Kings also became the highest-earning mobile game in lifetime player spend and the first to generate 10 billion in the mentioned category.

MiHoYo's Genshin Impact can be called the most popular game ever released because a few months after its launch, it became the fastest game to cross billion in player spending. Generating the bulk of its revenue from countries like China and Japan, the game ranks third. Roblox and Coin Master's revenue also rose sharply from the previous one, with these two games surpassing 1 billion in revenue.

Pokemon GO, an augmented reality game from Nintendo which saw its release in the month of 2016, and Candy Crush Saga, a renowned fun puzzle game have crossed 1.2 billion in revenue this year. Although player spending in Pokemon Go was down from the previous year.

The latest game to cross the billion revenue mark is Free Fire published by Garena. The game is giving tough competition to other battle royale titles like PUBG Mobile, especially in Asian countries. Garena had also launched Free Fire MAX this year, which has also become very popular among game lovers.
