Virtual events are becoming commonplace, with many artists hosting them as a way to generate revenue and connect with fans.
To make these virtual events easier to discover, Spotify now displays them in listings on the artist and discovery pages of the app.
The whole world has had to adapt to the impacts of COVID-19, and this is also true of artists and bands. Many have faced canceled or postponed shows, which is often one of their main sources of income.
To alleviate this, artists have held virtual performances to bring the magic of live music right to fans.
As announced on For the record, Spotify will now list these virtual events on the desktop and mobile app, just as it already does for traditional live broadcasts.
Any event listed on Songkick will automatically sync to Spotify, along with a number of Ticketmaster events. This includes shows happening on any external platform, like Twitch, Instagram and YouTube – as long as an event is created on Songkick, it will show up on Spotify.
You will be able to find listings of virtual events in several places.
The Concerts hub lists all upcoming virtual events, with some highlighted as recommended based on your listening habits. This can be found in the Browse desktop section and Search on mobile.
You will also see virtual events on artist profiles, in the Concerts (office) and On tour sections (mobile). It can also be displayed as the artist's highlight at the top of their page.
Finally, Spotify will occasionally email you with personalized virtual event recommendations to make sure you never miss out.
Although virtual performances have grown in popularity due to many people being stuck at home, they might be here to stay.
Companies like Google are certainly banking on it, as it recently launched a platform designed specifically for creators to host paid online events.
