If you're a big fan of Xbox Game Pass for PC, prepare for a price hike. The company announced that the price of Game Pass will double from $4.99/month to $9.99/month.
This news came via the official @XboxGamePassPC Twitter account. He announced that starting September 17, 2020, Xbox Game Pass for PC subscribers will have to pay more to access the Game Pass game library.
The reasoning behind this is mentioned earlier in the timeline. The original price of $4.99/month was an introductory price to get people started with Game Pass.
Now the Game Pass is moving to general availability, which means it's now officially "out of beta." As such, the introductory price will be replaced by the "proper" subscription cost of $9.99/month. If you are a current member, you will continue to pay $4.99 until the next billing cycle.
Fortunately, Microsoft has done a lot to sweeten the deal for Game Pass holders. Recently, the company announced that EA Play is joining the Game Pass library to give even more value to subscribers.
Note that this does not affect the price of Game Pass Ultimate, which also includes Game Pass for PC. As such, if you have Game Pass for PC, now would be a good time to consider upgrading to the Ultimate plan.
As the price of Game Pass for PC rises, it's not Microsoft's way of trying to leverage more of its fan base. The original price was introductory, and now that Xbox Game Pass for PC is coming out of beta, the price will go up with it.
However, with the recent addition of EA Play, Game Pass has never been better value for money. If more companies join forces with Microsoft in the future, Game Pass will become a small price to pay for the sheer volume of games in its library.
And that's before the Xbox Series X even hits the scene.
