Netflix is no stranger to gripping sci-fi series, with past hits like Altered Carbon and Sense8 thrilling viewers.
The streaming service is hoping to strike gold again with a recently announced original series based on Chinese author Liu Cixin's epic The Three-Body Problem book trilogy, backed by a cracking creative team.
The Three-Body Problem is actually the first book in the Remembrance of Earth's Past series, but fans usually refer to the collection by the old name.
The series is written by Chinese writer Liu Cixin, with the title first serialized in 2006 and then published in book form in 2008. They mix reality and science fiction, in a time when the Earth is being destroyed by its civilizations and under the threat of alien invasion.
The Three-Body Problem is one of China's most popular sci-fi series and it gained more acclaim from English-speaking audiences with Ken Liu's translations in 2014.
The books are also critically acclaimed, having won a Galaxy Award (the most prestigious science fiction award in China), a Hugo Award and a Nebula Award.
A Chinese film adaptation began production in 2015. However, it stalled and Amazon was reportedly after the rights. However, it is now assumed that this project has been abandoned.
The Netflix series, which will tackle all three books, is led by writers and executive producers David Benioff and DB Weiss (the couple behind the Game of Thrones TV show) and Alexander Woo (True Blood).
Rian Johnson and his working partner Ram Bergman (Knives Out, Star Wars:The Last Jedi) are on board as executive producers.
Author Liu Cixin and English translator Ken Liu are consulting with producers, which should ensure the Netflix series stays true to the source material.
in the Netflix Press Release, Cixin said:
Netflix not only offers a great selection of sci-fi movies and shows, of which The Three-Body Problem trilogy will be one, but also a wealth of informative science content.
From nature to chemistry, there's something on Netflix to satisfy the geek in us all.
